This is an excellent article and I commend Ms. Lloyd, Mr. Diaz, and Mr. Brennan for recognizing the fact that not only are our students struggling and overwhelmed, but so are our teachers. We are losing an excellent teaching in Lana Lloyd…what a loss for FCPS! If you want to grow a healthy plant, you have provide time for the fertilizer and water to sink in! As a former math teacher for FCPS, as well as a county Science/Math Facilitator, I have always believed that not only do we over assess but we teach for breadth not depth! The curriculum is overloaded with trivial skills that are often age inappropriate. When we look at Asian countries, for example, fractions aren’t even introduced to students until their teen years, when developmentally they are more prepared to understand and apply them. I have taught in this county for 32 years and am very concerned for our students’ future if Common Core and testing remains our ultimate goal!
